HISTORY: The 29th Olowo of Owo Kingdom

<SUNBIGHT> – THE 29th Olọwọ̀ of Ọ̀wọ̀, Oba Joseph Adékọlá Ọ̀gùnọyè II reigned from February 6, 1968 to March 22, 1993. He succeeded the late Olowo of Owo, Sir Olateru Olagbegi II who was dethroned in June of 1966 by the then Military governor of the Western Region, Colonel Robert Adeyinka Adebayo as a result of his political role against the state government.

Olọ́wọ̀ Adékọlá’s reign saw the establishment of the then Ondo State Polytechnic (now Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo), His reign also witness the establishment of the General Hospital, Owo (now Federal Medical centre, Owo).

It was also during his reign that Ọ̀wọ̀ indigene was democratically elected as the first executive Governor of Ondo State in the person of Pa.Michael Adékúnlé Ajásin who was in office from October 1, 1979 to December 31 1983.

When Oba Ogunoye died in the palace in 1993, Oba Olagbegi II was reinstated.■
