VETERAN Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, was on Thursday arrested by soldiers of the Nigerian Army.
The comic actor was arrested at Upper Iweka Onitsha, Anambra state.
In a video made available to SUNBIGHT MEDIA, the popular actor was seen surrendered by gun-wielding soldiers forcefully pulling him, later shot in the air to disperse the crowd that had begun to gather and protesting against the harassment of the actor.
Chinwetalu Agu was then whisked away and his vehicle abandoned by the roadside.
Witnesses who spoke to our reporter stated that the Nollywood actor alighted from his van to purchase bread and was accosted by the soldiers who began to interrogate him over his regalia made with Biafran flag.
Meanwhile the Nigerian Army Headquarters Abuja confirmed the arrest of Chiwetalu Agu in a press release titled “TROOPS ARREST CHIWETALU AGU WHILE SOLICITING SUPPORT FOR PROSCRIBED IPOB”.
The press release stated the actor was arrested “while inciting members of the public and soliciting for support for the proscribed Indegenous People of Biafra (IPOB).”
The Nigerian Army press statement also erroneously described the Biafran flag Chiwetalu Agu used for his regalia as a “very well known attire of the proscribed group.”
There are reports that the veteran actor was detained at 302 Onitsha Cantonment barracks but has been moved to 82 Division Enugu.♧
