■ Ex-Cameroonian international Samuel Eto’o has indicated interest in the candidacy for the contest of his country’s football federation (Fecafoot).
The four-time African player of the year made the announcement via his social media pages on Tuesday evening.
“Time is running out. Waiting is not an option. It is time to rebuild our football,” Eto’o said.
The Fecafoot elections which have been unduly delayed are expected to take place on December 11 prior to the Africa Cup of Nations set to be hosted in Cameroon by January 9, 2022.
Eto’o, 40-year-old, is his country’s record scorer with 56 goals in 118 games and also had a brief spell in the English Premier League with Chelsea and Everton, retiring in Qatar.
The former Barcelona and Inter Milan star had a distinguished playing career winning domestic and European titles in both Spain and Italy.
During his stint with Cameroon, he assisted his country to clinch the African Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002, he was also a gold medallist at the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games.
Samuel Eto’o interest in the Fecafoot job may be in jeopardy as candidates with dual citizenship are not allowed to participate in the elections. Eto’o was granted dual Spanish citizenship during his time in Barcelona.
The African legend joins four other candidates for the Fecafoot Presidency race in which declaration of interest ends on 11 October.
Other interested candidates are Jules Denis Onana and Emmanuel Maboang Kessack, who both played in the 1990 World Cup for Cameroon, also is the interim president Seidou Mbombo Njoya along with football agent Ivo Chi.●
