PRISON IN CENTRAL NIGERIA DESTROYED, OFFICERS KILLED AND INMATES RELEASED

KABBA PRISON IN KOGI STATE DESTROYED BY GUNMEN

■Overnight of Sunday 12 September, armed gunmen invaded an institution of confinement located in Kogi State, central Nigeria, destroyed strategic areas of the jail and released most of the inmates.

Recall that on April 5,unidentified gunmen brazenly raided the Owerri Prisons located by the police headquarters and freed more than 1,800 inmates.

Nigerian Minister of Interior, Rauf Aragbesola confirmed the attack on Kabba Medium Prisons Kogi state which also took the lives of two security officers and whereabouts of two others yet to be ascertained as at the time of publishing this report.

Aregbesola’s press release, had stated that after a brief from the country’s Prisons Chief, Haliru Nababa, the Kabba Medium Prisons with its joint armed security forces made up of 35 personnel could not withstand the prowess of the armed men.

He added that the facility had 294 inmates before it was attacked, many escaped aftermath and only 28 inmates decided to stay put.

In the minister’s press release signed by his Media Adviser, Sola Fasure, he urged the public to be vigilant and also remain calm. Stating that the situation is under control with activation of a crisis response centre and mobilisation of a Special Task force to trail the gunmen.

Concluding that INTERPOL has been notified with details of the prison escapees, as he warned them to voluntarily return back to the prison or be faced with fresh prosecution charges if apprehended.●
