SHOCKING TRANSFER AS GRIEZMANN RETURNS TO ATHELICO MADRID

■ In a shock move on the final period of the European summer transfer window, France forward Antoine Griezmann has made a return to Atletico Madrid on a loan deal just two years after leaving to join Barcelona.

Barcelona released an official statement announcing a two-year loan deal, and at the end of that period an obligatory purchase option comes into force, for a fee of around 40 million euros, though the purchase shall depend on games played during that period of time.

Another clue in the agreement between the clubs also states that Atletico can buy the player at any time during the loan period. The transfer fee for such a purchase is already set out in the contract, but is unknown at this moment.

The Catalan club has been struggling financially and had to allow six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi to leave for PSG last month.

“Welcome back, Griezmann!” Atletico wrote on its website. He scored 133 goals in his first spell with the Madrid club.

Meanwhile, Barcelona obtained the services of Luuk de Jong on loan from Sevilla. The Blaugrana have a purchase option on the Dutchman, but it’s not mandatory. In addition, part of the player’s wages will be paid by the Andalusian side.●
